On Friday, June 24th, in conjunction with Alleyways Market, send + receive presents a special outdoor iteration of recent work by artist Scotland Cook. Inspired by video works by Greg Curnoe documenting his hometown of London, Ontario as well as electronic glitch/noise music, VOID is composed of found sounds recorded by the artist around Winnipeg, as well as reproductions of silver gelatine prints iterating a single motif. Pairing an arrangement of collected sounds with a beat sequencer, VOID draws forth the beauty and possibilities of the urban environment that are ignored or taken for granted.

Scotland Cook is an emerging artist from treaty 1 territory, Winnipeg, Manitoba and is a recent graduate from the School of Art at the University of Manitoba. Informed by experimentation with graffiti, skateboarding and sludge metal Scotland’s current artistic practice is focused on abstraction, leftist politics and is heavily referential to modernist aesthetics. Scotland’s artworks are vibrant, energetic and carry a radical sense of resistance. Via a laborious and personal aesthetic language of mark making and distressing what are often found objects, Scotland expresses their feelings of detachment from their surroundings and attempts to remedy this feeling by way of labour and spontaneous aesthetic decisions.
