In partnership with Maison des Artistes, our twenty-fourth edition features two works of analog candor, soliciting exploration and play. Esquisse by Olivia-Faye Lathuillière encourages the spectator to trace sounding lines on a canvas of magnetic tape, drawing their own sonic discoveries and associations by hand and by ear. Arrangement for turntables (1) by Scott Fitzpatrick makes a mechanical intervention in the gallery space, as mounted turntables escalate a multi-rhythmic din.

“The artwork that I have been developing in the last 10 years is protean and multidisciplinary. I work on a scene or an installation the same way I work on a photograph or a video. The projection of the thoughts beyond the body into space, and its impact on the world are the foundational subjects of my artistic approach. Everything is movement, everything is light; I am interested in the idea of suggestion, of what we find between the lines and what is left unsaid. The resonance of the unseen is what I am searching to articulate. It is for me the very state from which anything can come to life.
Esquisse provokes the artistic process of the mind. The audience takes the place of “the artist” and explores the sounds the canvas is creating by drawing on it. Therefore the manipulator explores the space of the piece, reading or discovering what it contains. The data we see represents a length of 289 minutes and contains secrets. The accent is put on the body gesture navigating the canvas through lines and pressure.”
Olivia-Faye Lathuillière is a Canadian artist whose work takes the form of sound installations, video, film and performance. With the quest for essence as its starting point, the notion of the ephemeral is almost systematic in her plastic and scenic work. The heart of her practice takes place in the moment and in the intimate relationship between the body and its environment and choreographs matter and light in motion through gesture. She has been presented internationally in festivals and galleries in Quebec (Mutek, OFFTA, Casteliers), Spain (Museum of Contemporary Art of Alicante (Videoart fest), the United Kingdom (Manipulate festival, Tobacco Factory Theatre (UK)) and the United States (La Mama Expérimental theatre (NYC), Aggregate Space Gallery (CA)). In 2016, she founded EQUIVOC, a contemporary arts production company and choreographic installation based in Tiohti:áke – Montreal, QC.

Arrangement for turntables (1) is a sound installation that takes as material a selection of children’s toys, assorted hardware, and three modified AT-LP60 turntables. Its aesthetic is informed by a bricolagist’s sensibility and a shoplifter’s budget, and was conceived in an attempt to make something funny, which grew to an attempt to make something lovely. It proposes an exploration of melody, syncopation, automation, and performance, and arrives under a field of influence from artists such as Graham Dunning, Mike Maryniuk, Y Pants, UJINO, and Colby Richardson.
Scott Fitzpatrick (Libra) is a media artist from Winnipeg, MB, whose practice engages film, video, sound, collage, photography, printmaking and performance. His work has been exhibited internationally and has received prizes from the WNDX Festival of Moving Image, the Ann Arbor Film Festival, Festival du nouveau cinéma, and more. He is interested in rhythm, music, light, outmoded technology, translation, and adaptation. His work ranges from analytic and essayistic to purely sensorial, always maintaining an eye on humour, duration, and engagement.
