3Phaz is a Cairo based electronic producer mostly known for his debut album ‘Three Phase’, an album that presented a powerful and fresh new take on egyptian mahraganat/shaabi sound; the record was released on Egyptian label 100Copies in 2020. With further singles and remixes released on the likes of Rinse, Boomkat, Polaar, Nashazphone, and Irsh, 3Phaz quickly carved his way into the international club music scene allowing him to perform all around Europe.
3Phaz’s sophomore album ‘Ends Meet’ was released in Feb 2023 on Discrepant sub-label Souk followed by his EP ‘DramTraTrax’ released on Tratratrax in May 2023, both of which were featured in multiple end of year lists including Pitchfork, The Quietus, and Bandcamp to name a few.
Born in Lima, Peru and based in NYC, Maria Chávez is best known as an abstract turntablist, sound artist and DJ. Coincidence, chance and failures are themes that unite her work across mediums, including improvised performance, sound and marble sculpture, visual art, book objects and an extensive history with multi-channel installation. Her approach is rooted in Deep Listening, a form of embodied listening developed by her late mentor Pauline Oliveros. Maria’s relationship with Oliveros was recently covered in a BBC3 radio episode of Afterwords, chronicling the late composers impact on a new generation of artists. She also graced the cover of The Wire in April 2023 with The Turntable Trio.
Maria is the only abstract turntablist in the world who performs with a rare needle known as the RAKE Double Needle. This special device contains two needles on one head, allowing it to read two different segments of a single record at the same time. Paired with her inimitable ability to create unforgettable sonic experiences from shards of broken records, each performance is truly unique.
Maria’s practice is profoundly expansive, responsive and curious. Her work has been featured and supported by a myriad of institutions over the past decades including Rewire Festival, Counterflows Festival, Donau Festival, MoMA PS1, The Getty, DOCUMENTA 14, the JUDD Foundation, Cambridge University Press and many, many more. Chavez’s 2012 book, Of Technique: Chance Procedures on Turntable has garnered a reputation as both an academic resource on turntablism and a foundational text for a new generation of turntablists.
Compost is nutrient rich music for a healthy body and mind. They balance analog ambient atmospheres with hip-hop-informed rhythm, and soaring fx-drenched melodies with dangerously dynamic drums, while cycling between meditation and movement. With Fender Rhodes, electric bass, and live drums at the core, each performance is a slow-growing ecosystem: layered, textural, and continually evolving.
Compost has quickly wormed their way into Manitoba’s hearts and are just as likely to perform a festival stage such as Winnipeg Jazz Festival, Cluster Festival, and Rainbow Trout as throwing their own DIY Nuit Blanche shows. With three studio albums released, they have been featured on CKUW and CBC Radio 2’s After Dark with Odario Williams.
Compost’s telepathic connection comes from 18 years of making music together in various contexts. Their live show sounds as much like an intimate conversation as it does a dance party. Their kinship transcends wide ranging tastes and influences, bonding instead over their love of listening, exploration, and a curiosity to dive into each others’ worlds.
Julian Beutel, Eric Roberts and Justin Alcock, raised in small towns in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario, respectively, met while studying music at Brandon University in western Manitoba. They now reside in Winnipeg, Canada.
